Technically it would be better submit links for each category that contains final items to be pinged.
I explain better, for example if you have:

-category 1 -> 20 articles
--category 1.1 -> 10 articles
---category 1.1.1 -> 5 articles

you should submit links for all 3 categories showing sub articles that will be pinged.
