Have you tried to use the pre caching feature of jsitemap pro?
This is done to generate large sitemaps and caching for fast fetch by search engines.
Splitting of sitemaps is normally required only for more than 50000 links, if you have only 18000 products by virtuemart splitting should not be needed.
