the precaching for images sitemap works as a crawler normally for all links of products. For each product page all images are included, using the exclusion filters you can setup to exclude some images based on path criteria.

Probably it would be most important to understand how many links/products have to be crawled and the reason and details of the error to solve or change the configuration. You can contact me by email, you have my email address.
