if you need to upgrade, you have to do this using the latest version of Joomla available, currently 3.3.2.

Upgrading from Joomla 2.5 to Joomla 3.x series is not mandatory, and is enterily up to you. If you need particular features not available in Joomla 2.5 you can upgrade, otherwise stay on Joomla 2.5.

If you choose to upgrade, keep in mind that probably quite all extensions installed will need to be upgraded, also my JSitemap component.

The procedure to upgrade can be done using the Joomla update component, enabling the 'Long term release' option in the configuration of the component.

Before you go on with such an upgrade, it's strongly recommended to take a full backup of current site, even better it would be perform some tests on a demo domain.
