As you can see from http://optimizedpanama.com/ we basically have the same pages on the English and Spanish sides of the website but only one Spanish page is being included in the sitemap. (see attachment)

What could be causing this issue?

Hello Mike,

the sitemaps need to be managed one per each language, you can't mix multiple languages in the same sitemap. having specific sitemaps for each language improve Google indexing. With the dropdown of the language switcher in the SEO dashboard you can easily set links for both languages on your site for XML.

The Joomla language manager will do the rest and also for the HTML sitemap attached to menu items the language will be switched.

Thanks for the rapid response - if I understand it correctly we need a sitemap added the Websmaster tools for each language?

I deleted a lot of the of menus that came with this template but they are still appearing in the sitemap - how do we remove them from the sitemap?

Yes exactly, GWT accept multiple sitemaps for type, languages, etc

The sitemap is normally generated in realtime unless you are using a caching solution, so when you add/delete elements the sitemap is immediately updated. Ensure no cache are still active.
