Hi Jacktor,

it sounds like a problem due to the different or empty translations for the text used in the search field.
The translation is named COM_JCHAT_SEARCH.

By defaut it was ' Search' so try to set it as original and check if the 2 and 3 counters show normal counting of users.

The counter 1 in backend is not suitable for frontend chat also, because it's based on pure Joomla session lifetime and not realtime.

Hi Jacktor,

it could be due to magic quotes if still on, or on some extensions that block requests for security purpouse, such as Admin Tools.

Eventually contact me to send an admin account if you need on site assist.
