I'm trying to have both chat (I have create only one chat room which is going to be accessible by a specific user group) and live support for everyone so that people (guests or members) can contact us.
I have enabled live support and have given access to public as per the documentation but I only see the chat with no options. I mean I click on chat and nothing happens.
Obviously I'm missing something.

i'm not sure what you mean, it's too generic.
If you enable the live support mode and choose a user group in the dropdown, then users beloging to that user group will be able to login in the Joomla frontend and chat with guest visitors.
Guest visitors won't be able to chat with each other.
This means that you can't use the normal chat + live support mode at the same time.

Ok. Forget about Live support. Let's say I don't care about it for the time being.

I want to have a single room which will be accessible by a specific user group.

I have created that room and have assigned access to the desired group.

When I login as a user of that group I'm faced with a public chat room and I have to select the private room.
But since I have only one room defined (private) why am I seeing the public room?
I would like to be joined to the private room automatically since this is the only room available and I have access to it.
This is going to be confusing form my users.

If I disable chat for public at the backend then I cannot choose a room at frontend!

Please let me know how I can achieve the above simple scenario.

Because this can't be achieved, the answer is simple :O

Once a user connect there is always the public default room, after that users can choose to join another specific room.

if you don't want this you need to customize the extension.

can I then rename "Public Chat" without having any chat rooms?

This will be fine as I want one room which can be the default Public Chat but I need to rename it.
