jchat_public_readmessages = 3 million records Karma: 0  
Currently this table is nearly 200MB and causing issues with backups.
Is there a function to clear safely, can it be emptied?

Yes of course you find buttons in the messages list, you can delete selected messages or all older messages than the parameter named 'Keep latest messages when delete(days)' in the advanced config.

No, that's left to the user decision when to purge old messages and records.
