FYI we ran additional tests, even with only Super Users group assigned this issue didn't happen at all.
So my thoughts are that it could be an isolated case where some third party extension could interfere, but have no elements to dig or reproduce at the moment.

Found it!
It's caused by the component "Admin Tools". In it's firewall there's an enabled option "Forbid front-end Super Administrator login".
All good now!
